1. We only use cdn.joomdev.com to host images since it's easier to import the images via a URL instead of asking the user to manually copy the images into the web directory.
1.1. We are working on the ability where images are downloaded with the import/export process and import/export changed to a zip instead of a JSON file (so it contains images as well).
2. We don't plan to take it down at the moment or in the near future as it hosts images delivered in all the templates & builder pages.
We expected users are going to change the images anyways but it is recommend to download the images and link to a local file if/when possible.
